Chiang Khong, east of Chiang Rai and on the banks of the Mekong is an excellent overnight trip. The town exudes the traditional Lanna Charm, and serves as a crossing point to Huayxai, Laos. Quite a number of excursions to Luang Prabang beginning at Chiang Khong. Comfortable and affordable guest houses can be found along the main road and along the river.
